The Masked Series is a collection of self-portraits that pose questions about the representation of personal ideologies, i.e. gender, race, age, within the history of portraiture. What happens with the identity of a subject when we disrobe the contents of personality that are tied to perceptions of the self? How do we attempt to assign a fixed identity to a subject when many of the visual signifiers are missing?
From the Masked Series, C-Print, 2012, It is consumed with the masquerade / of the doubling to question one’s existence and to negotiate where one is placed in reference to the other. They act as a mirror of oneself and of the outside, using the body as a performance to mediate alterity.
